Installation Instructions: CL4W v.4.xx

InterBase XE3

Version 4 of CL4W requires InterBase XE3 which provides OTW (Over the Wire) encryption between the client PCs and the server and encryption of selected columns within the data tables. For example, you should consider encrypting sensitive data such as tax IDs (SSNs and EINs), driver’s license numbers, and birthdates. You should not encrypt data that is used to sort or locate data records such as names, account numbers, or other identification columns.

Conversion to InterBase XE3 is easy. Use your existing version of InterBase to create an InterBase backup of your existing database. Then install InterBase XE3 (choose the 32-bit version and choose gds_32) and update your InterBase license keys. Use XE3 to restore your database using the backup you created. After that step, your database is now versioned as an XE3 database and can be used by the new version of CL4W as well as by the older version of CL4W (call us if you intend to use the older version of CL4W).

Do not implement any encryption at this time. But, you should start becoming familiar with the steps required for encryption. Review the PDF documents installed by XE3. In particular, you should read Chapter 13 of the Data Definition Guide and Chapter 1 of the Operations Guide.

Backup

Create an InterBase backup of your new XE3 CL4W database. Also, create a JIC (just in case) backup of the CL4W.exe file.

Install CL4W Updates

Before you begin an update, all CL4W users should logout.

If Required:

  1. Run the Database Update Install on your server. The Database Update Install program will create a database metadata update program on your server named DBUpdate.exe in the Bin folder of CL4W and create a shortcut to this program on your Desktop.
  2. Run the database update program and click the Update Database button to start the update process. Update processing messages will be displayed and if any problem is encountered, an error message will be displayed. If there is a problem, call us before you end the update program (don’t waste time with an email) we’ll need the information displayed to determine the problem.

Run the Program Update Install on your server. The installation program will replace CL4W.exe, update the online help files, and update any form files with new versions. A “What’s New” file is also installed and users can view this file using the CL4W menu command Help | What’s New. Users can now use the updated version of CL4W.

If all is OK, make an InterBase backup of the CL4W database at the end of processing for the day.

Call us (928-852-4105) to advise us that you’ve installed this update.
